The Department of Education and the Commonwealth
Educational Policy Institute (CEPI) invite you to attend the Virginia Summit
for Educational Leadership: A Call to Action on May 2-3, 2007, at
the Crowne Plaza Hotel,

Featured
speakers for Thursday, May 3, include the 2005 National High School Principal
of the Year, Dr. Mel Riddile, of Alexandria City Public
Schools; the 2005 National Middle School Principal of the Year, Sharon Byrdsong, of Norfolk City Public Schools; and Virginias
2006 candidate for National Distinguished Principal, Susan Bridges, of Culpeper
County Public Schools. Sessions will be led by Andy Cole, Director of LEAD
Fairfax and Leadership Development for Fairfax County Public Schools. The LEAD
Nearly
six years ago, the Commonwealth joined 14 states in the State Action for
Educational Leadership Project (SAELP), funded by The Wallace Foundation, to develop
and support effective leaders with the goal of improving student achievement. As
a result of this initiative, significant changes have been made in Virginia,
including the requirement of the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) for
the administration and supervision endorsement; stronger partnerships among school
divisions, institutions of higher education preparing school leaders, and
professional organizations; and the creation of the Commonwealth Educational
Roundtable by the 2007 Virginia General Assembly.
