SUBJECT:	Career and Technical Education New Teacher Institute

The New Teacher Institute is designed for career and technical education teachers needing the Methods of Teaching or Curriculum and Instruction requirement for teacher licensure, or the Virginia Board of Nursing Train the Trainer. The institute is scheduled for Monday, July 23, 2007, through Friday, July 27, 2007, at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel and Conference Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The purpose of the New Teacher Institute is to provide assistance and staff development for those teachers who come from business/industry and health-care facilities to teach career and technical education in public schools. This training is designed to help the new teacher transition from the workplace to the classroom.

The New Teacher Institute addresses methods of teaching, testing, evaluation, curriculum design, and issues relating to success in the classroom. The institute is conducted by Dr. Roger Mackey, professor at the University of Virginia. The University of Virginia, upon completion of the course, will award three semester hours of undergraduate or graduate credit. Teachers may pay the tuition and may also register on-site the first day of class (see Attachment A). The institute will satisfy the Methods of Teaching or Curriculum and Instruction requirement for teacher licensure. It will also satisfy the Virginia Board of Nursing "Train the Trainer" regulation for nursing faculty employed to teach the nurse aide program.

The Department of Education will cover the cost of a hotel room at double occupancy rate in accordance with state guidelines, and will provide lunch and refreshment breaks. If a single room is requested, the participant must pay the difference in cost for a single room before leaving the hotel. Attachment A contains the registration form, directions, and the goals and objectives of the institute.
