March 2, 2001
| TO: | Division Superintendents |
| FROM: | Jo
Lynne DeMary
Superintendent of Public Instruction |
| SUBJECT: | Preliminary Legislative Report from the 2001 General Assembly Session |
On February 24, 2001, the 2001 General Assembly Session ended. This memorandum provides information about legislation passed during the session that is of interest to
superintendents and school division personnel. Bills passed by both the House of Delegates and the Senate are now subject to review by Governor Gilmore’s office. The Governor may choose to sign a bill adopted by the General Assembly, amend the bill, or veto it. If a bill is signed, it goes into effect on July 1, 2001, unless otherwise indicated. If a bill is amended, the General Assembly will either accept or reject the Governor’s amendments during the reconvened session scheduled for April 4, 2001. During the reconvened session, vetoes of bills by the Governor may be overridden by the General Assembly, with the votes of two- thirds of its members.

A preliminary legislative report that provides a summary of each bill passed by the 2001 General Assembly, grouped by category, with a reference to the affected section of the Code, may be found on the Department of Education’s website at http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/PolicyPub/legis98/billsum01.pdf.
